Worship Method:
The main worship method of Hongfu Temple in Shanghai is the traditional Chinese Buddhist practice of “Four-Sided Offering” or “Four Praises”. This method is simple and meaningful which consists of four parts such as Praise of Taking Refuge, Praise of Making Vows, Praise of Entrustment and Praise of Requesting Blessings. On each day, around 8am to 9am, the devotees of the temple come to offer incense and kneel down in reverence, before chanting the Praises of Taking Refuge in the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha). After that, they utter the Praise of Making Vows to the Triple Gem, consecutively and for each the “Four Great Vows” chanted by all Buddhist followers. Subsequently, the devotees enter the Praise of Entrustment, vowing to put forth effort in purifying their body, mind and spirit, mindful of all living creatures, cultivating good conduct and free from any kind of harm or illness. Then, in the Praise of Requesting Blessings, the devotees request for the enrichment of resources and knowledge, request for beneficial conditions and guides, and request for social harmony and world peace. After finishing the chanting, the devotees will then bow again in reverence, before placing flowers and incense sticks in front of the altar inside the temple.
