The worship method of Wenshu Temple on Mount Wutai in China is an amalgamation of traditional Buddhism and local folk religion. Worshippers may chant sutras, worship the temple's main statues, do prostrations, make offerings such as incense and fruit, and make vows to gain Buddha’s grace. The main event held in the temple is a grand prayer ceremony. This is usually held during the 21st of the 8th lunar month to commemorate the eight virtues of Bhaisajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha), or the 8th day of the 4th lunar month to commemorate the birth of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha). During these ceremonies, devotees can offer incense, flowers, fruits, and coins as a sign of their devotion. People will also recite special prayers by the side of the statue when offering their respects. Other popular folk customs in Wenshu Temple are the lighting of candles and praying for blessings. Pilgrims will bow after reaching the front of the temple, perform prostrations and throw coins into donation boxes. People may also make offerings to the temple's numerous statues and offer blessings for health and longevity. It is said that merchants pray to the Bhaisajyaguru for more sales and wealth.
