History:

Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, Australia was established in 1993, with an aim to preserve the unique rainforests and sand dunes as well as to protect the endangered species in the area that are threatened due to development. The park was initially established as a refuge for three endangered species: the green and golden bell frog, the wallum froglet, and the black headed python. The park spans over an area of 28,000 hectares along the Cooloola Coast and includes both Fraser Island and the Noosa National Park. It stretches from the Mary River in the North all the way to the Little Sandy Straits in the South. The park offers visitors a variety of experiences, including hiking, picnicking, four wheel drive touring, camping, beach activities, swimming, fishing and birdwatching. Several creeks and freshwater oases provide visitors with a break from the coastal air. The park is especially known for its stunning coastal scenery and its diverse flora and fauna. It is home to many species of birds, animals, and reptiles, including koalas, wallabies, possums, platypuses, fish, and various lizard and snake species. The region's dunal system is of great scientific value, and is home to a wealth of unique vegetation including mangroves, coastal heath, old growth Eucalyptus stands, freshwater wetlands, and rainforest.
