Prayers are offered to Lord Venkateswara, also known as Lord Balaji, and the Poojah begins with the recitation of several selected Sanskrit verses. During the Poojah, devotees offer flowers, fruits, coconut and money to Lord Venkateswara. They then perform an abhisheka (bathing) ritual with waters collected from sacred rivers like the Ganges, Narmada and Yamuna. When the Poojah is over, devotees take prasadam (sacred food) and sing Kirtans (devotional songs). Deepa aradhanai (lighting of the lamp) and Namasankeerthanam (singing of names of Lord Venkateswara) are also performed by the devotees.
