Worship Method:

Fayuan Temple in Beijing is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the Dongcheng District of Beijing. It is one of the oldest temples in the city, having been founded over a thousand years ago in the Tang Dynasty period (618-907 CE). The temple is known for its traditional religious culture, as it is home to a large collection of Buddhist scriptures, ancient statues, and is host to a variety of special ceremonies throughout the year. At Fayuan Temple, Tibetan Buddhism is practiced in adoration of the “Three Jewels” (the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha). Worshipers typically begin their visit to the temple by circumambulating the sutra hall, bell tower, and drum tower, while chanting Buddhist mantras and reciting scriptures. After circling the three structures, worshippers typically enter the Hall of Heavenly Kings to offer incense and bow to the presiding figures. From here, they would then enter the main hall, which houses the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha‎ in the center of the hall. In this hall, worshipers can offer incense, prostrations, and kowtow before the Sakyamuni statue, and prayer beads may be employed to recite prayers and supplications. Other ritualistic acts may be performed in the hall, such as chanting sutras, circumambulating around the hall three times, and prostrating in the four directions. In addition to the religious practice taking place in the main hall, there are also various Buddhist ceremonies that take place in Fayuan Temple’s courtyards throughout the year. For example, during the Qingming Festival, Buddhist monks organize a solemn ceremony to honor the deceased. During the Lantern Festival, gauze lanterns are lit in the sutra hall to venerate the Buddhas and buddhas-to-be. There are also ceremonies to honor past monks and holy figures, such as the Abbot Yuan Jing’s birthday ceremony in August. This most visited temple in China
