Cerro Baúl is an archaeological site located in the Moquegua Region of southern Peru. It is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters and surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes mountains. The site is believed to have been inhabited by the Tiwanaku culture between 500 and 1000 AD, when it was an important administrative hub. Cerro Baúl was a fortified settlement and formed part of the Tiwanaku’s administrative and religious center. According to the archaeological inventory, the site was built on a stepped platform made of stone and clay. This structure enclosed the large ceremonial plaza where events and ritual activities took place. The settlement was divided into two sectors: the urban sector and the administrative sector. The urban sector was relatively small and comprised of mostly residential buildings. The administrative sector was larger and included a number of large structures, including an elevated platform, a sunken court, a series of plazas, an architectural complex, and two pyramids. The large structures were aligned in the direction of the four cardinal points and used to make offerings and sacrifices to the gods. Cerro Baúl was also an important religious and spiritual center, as evidenced by the many stone carving and sculptures found at the site.
