Overview:

Located in the province of Junín, Hatun Xauxa is one of the oldest settlements of the ancient Chavín culture, and the most important archaeological site of the region. It is believed to have been inhabited between 1000 and 500 B.C. and features a number of masonry monuments, such as circular platforms of varying sizes and shapes, platforms with raised walls and steps, stone architecture, stairways and drainage canals. The most notable feature of Hatun Xauxa is its sunken circular plaza, believed to have served as an important site of worship and a ceremonial center for its ancient inhabitants. History:

The history of Hatun Xauxa in Junín, Peru, dates back to a group of people from the Ayacucho area who, in the 1600s, were the first to inhabit the area. The group originally lived in the district of Huayucachi and consisted of the Yawar Huayta, Nihualas, and Andatinas cultures. The area was known as the Xauxa Valley and was known for its rich agricultural land. In 1675, the Viceroyalty of Peru created the province of Xauxa in honor of the first inhabitants of the area, in what is now the Junin Region. This was the beginning of the modern-day Hatun Xauxa, which was formally established in 1763. In 1858, the region was named Hatun Xauxa in recognition of the region’s original indigenous culture and its original inhabitants. Hatun Xauxa is an important area in Peru’s history. It was the birthplace of the wars of independence that led to the creation of the modern-day nation of Peru.
