The Volgograd Memorial Complex is a memorial complex dedicated to the Battle of Stalingrad. The complex was designed to commemorate the historic battle and its importance to the Great Patriotic War. The complex is located in Volgograd, a city founded in 1589 as Tsaritsyn. It became known as Stalingrad during World War II and received its current name when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The complex was constructed in the late 1940’s and it consists of several major monuments, including the Monument to the Defenders of Stalingrad and the Eternal Flame Memorial. The Monument to the Defenders of Stalingrad is one of the largest outdoor sculptures in the world and it depicts a group of figures in heroic poses, representing both soldiers and civilians of the war-time city. The Eternal Flame Memorial honors the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Stalingrad and stands at the edge of the city from which the Battle was fought. Other aspects of the complex include Memorial Avenues, which are lined with trees, and honor the heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad, as well as memorial plaques across the city to remember the events of the battle. The complex also contains the Panorama Museum, which showcases the events of Stalingrad, the Hall of Military Glory, and the Hall of Eternal Glory. Additionally, the complex serves as a popular tourist attraction and a historical site. It is also the site of a yearly Victory Day parade.
