The Fortress of Naryshkin Bastion is a 16th-century fortification located on the outskirts of Smolensk, in Russia. The fortress was originally built in 1585-1586 by Tsar Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) to strengthen the defense of Russia against Polish and Western European armies. The fortress was named after its first major commander, Grigorii Naryshkin. It is one of the best churches in Russia which you must visit.

History:

The fortress played an important role in the Defense of Smolensk event in 1611, when a Polish-Lithuanian army laid siege on the city. The fortress held out for two months until the Poles were forced to retreat. During the Napoleonic Wars, the fortress was captured by the French and later recaptured by the Russians in 1812. During World War II, the fortress was taken by the Germans in 1941 and retaken by the Russians in 1943. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
