The Cathedral of the Transfiguration was designed by the prominent Russian architect and urban planner Joseph Bové, who also designed other prominent churches in Russia, such as the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow. The cathedral was built to replace an earlier wooden church which had been constructed in the 1840s but had since fallen into disrepair. Construction of the cathedral began in 1839 and was completed in 1846. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
