State Tretyakov Gallery is a renowned art gallery located in Moscow, Russia. It was founded in 1856 by Pavel Tretyakov, an art collector, who donated more than 2,000 works of Russia’s then-predominant Realist school of art. In 1865, Tretyakov purchased two buildings on what is now Lavrushinsky Lane and began expanding the collection. It is one of the best churches in Russia which you must visit.

State Tretyakov Gallery began with businessman and philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov’s donation of his personal art collection to the city of Moscow in 1892. The artwork in the collection came from his extensive travels and historical interest in Russian art, and he continued to add to the collection right up until his death in 1898. The gallery was officially opened to the public in 1892, and it quickly became one of Russia’s most visited attractions. In the decades since opening, State Tretyakov Gallery has amassed an incredible selection of artwork, including iconic works by Russian masters such as Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, and Vasily Surikov. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
