Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky In Russia: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The cathedral was founded by a local monk named Lyasota in 1130 and was dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was celebrated by the local population as the heavenly protector of the city. The church was initially constructed under the direction of the Bishop of Rostov, who was sent to Pereslavl-Zalessky to spread Christianity. In 1144, the cathedral was renovated under the patronage of St. Andrew the Apostle, after which it was renamed Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the cathedral was transformed into a Baroque style building, which was completed in 1780. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.

The cathedral is the tallest building in Pereslavl-Zalessky, measuring over 90 feet in height. It is composed of five separate domes and is built of cut stone and brickwork. Inside, a large stained glass window covers the apse, depicting the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today, the cathedral offers a wide variety of services such as Orthodox Divine Liturgies, Vespers services, weekly sermons, lectures, and retreats.
