Palace of the Republic in Kazan is a large multifunctional cultural and entertainment center located in Kazan, Russia. It is the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe, having an area of more than 70,000 square meters. The palace was opened on November 30, 2001, and it includes a congress hall, concert hall, theater halls, sports hall, game and fun zone, conference halls, restaurants, and a shopping center. The history of the Palace of the Republic goes back to the Soviet era where Aleksey Mashistov, a former mayor of Kazan, proposed a project of constructing a grand palace. After two years of planning and construction, the Palace of the Republic was opened in 2001. The building was designed by renowned French architect Jean Michel Wilmotte who made use of modern design and engineering techniques.
