The monument that now stands in the center of the square was ordered by Czar Alexander III in 1884 to celebrate the life of Alexander Ostrovsky, who was an important figure in the history of Russian culture and the theatre. He is often credited as one of Russia’s most acclaimed writers of the 19th century.
