Azov Fortress is a Russian citadel and formerly fortified town in the Azov Sea region at the north-eastern corner of the Sea of Azov in southern Russia. The fortress has a long and distinguished history, dating back to the late 16th century when it was first built. Azov Fortress has been involved in numerous wars and conflicts over the years, including the Russo-Turkish War in 1696 and the Great Northern War of 1700 to 1721. History:

The first traces of the Azov Fortress are found in 1567. The great Cossack leader Stepan Razin built it in order to protect the station of Azov from the Tatars who continuously raided the region. The fortress was expanded and strengthened in the 17th century and was soon the largest and most fortified fortress in the Azov region. During the Russo-Turkish War, the Azov Garrison played an integral role in the Allied advance, serving as a launching point for attacks on Azov and the Crimean Khanate. The fortress was destroyed in 1711 during the Pruth Campaign of the Great Northern War but was rebuilt quickly afterward. The fortress was further strengthened in the 19th century and during the Crimean War of 1853 to 1856. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
