Mariinsky Palace in St. Petersburg is a grand Russian palace situated on the left bank of the Neva River. Built in the early 19th century, it was used by the Imperial family of Russia and later by the Soviet People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs. Today, it is the home of the Governor of St. Petersburg. History:

The palace was commissioned by Tsar Alexander I in the 1820s to be a country residence for himself, his wife the Empress Elizaveta Alekseyevna and their growing family. During the Russian Civil War (1917-1922), the palace was occupied by leaders of the Bolsheviks, who attributed to it a considerable part of the city’s victories of this period. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.

Mariinsky Palace stands 145 meters long, 79 meters wide and 30 meters high. It has 13 fountains and some 230 staterooms, as well as a chapel, working farm, dairy, bakery, and a tannery. The palace has two stories above ground and three stories below.
