History:
The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior was constructed between 1144 and 1150 under the orders of the Russian prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, who wanted a grand and opulent cathedral for the city. Its foundation was laid under the direction of Bishop Ioakim in the presence of the rulers of Novgorod and Pskov at the time, and the building was completed by 1150. Over the next centuries, the cathedral underwent several expansion projects to add chapels, frescos, and other decorations. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
