History
The first parish of Eglise Immaculée was founded in 1816, when Father Jean-Louis Guyon was appointed as its pastor by Archbishop Joseph Signay. The original parish was a simple wooden frame building located near the corner of Viger and St. Lawrence streets, and was mainly used as a chapel and a resting place for travelers.
Over the years, the demand for larger and more elaborate churches increased, and in 1832 another chapel was built near the corner of Eglise Immaculée and St. Denis streets. This new chapel, known as Chapel of Notre Dame de la Vigie, was made of stone and was larger than the first one.
In 1884, the decision to build a larger church was made, and the construction of Eglise Immaculée began. This new structure was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and featured a large white dome with gold accents, as well as a large bell tower. The interior of the church was also decorated in traditional French style, and featured intricate stonework and stained glass windows.
