History:

White Columns Estate is a historic estate located near Saint Petersburg, Russia. The history of the estate goes back to the 18th century when it was acquired by Count Sergei Grigoryevich Gagaryin, who primary residence at the time was the nearby Strelna Palace. In 1754, the count had the two-storey estate built with white columns, hence its current name. By the middle of the 19th century, the estate was inherited by the count’s son, Sergei Petrovich Gagarin. In 1861, the estate and its lands were purchased by Grand Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov, who intended to build an English-style park called “Lato” based on designs by the famous landscape architect Mikhail Mikeshin. Unfortunately, the project never made it past the planning stage and the land was eventually sold to a Russian merchant and entrepreneur, Nikolay Abrikosov. In 1887, Abrikosov commissioned architect Nikolay Nekrasov to create a luxurious summer residence. While the original edifice has remained the same, the residence underwent several reconstructions in the 20th century, during which its style was changed from Neo-Baroque to Stalinist classism. After the revolution, the estate was nationalized and turned into a officers’ training and recreation center, and later, a therapeutic health center. White Columns Estate is currently owned by the city of Saint Petersburg and has been protected as a federal monument. In 2006, the estate opened its gates to the general public for the first time in a long while.
