Worship Method:
Tsukiji Hongan-ji is the main temple of the Jodo Shin school of Pure Land Buddhism in Japan. It is located in a prime location in central Tokyo, just south of the Imperial Palace. The traditional worship method of Tsukiji Hongan-ji is based on the Lotus Sutra, which is the main scripture of the Pure Land Buddhism. The ceremony consists of chanting the Heart Sutra, reciting sutras, reading scriptures, visualizing the Buddha, and making offerings. The offering made during worship includes use of incense, flowers, water and food and consists of 108 bows and prostrations. The worshippers circumambulate the main altar after each offering, while using a rosary and chanting the Heart Sutra. The ceremony also includes a ritual for releasing sentient beings from suffering. This ritual involves dedicating personal merits to all phenomena and releasing all negative karma from one’s own past lives. The main altar at Tsukiji Hongan-ji features a seated statue of Amitabha Buddha with an image of Shakyamuni Buddha at the center. At the end of the worship services, people may join in a devotional prayer to Amida Buddha and make an offering of incense and other items to the Buddha. This traditional form of worship at Tsukiji Hongan-ji is said to be a very effective means of accumulating merits and creating blessed conditions for all living beings.
