The construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral was initiated by Tsar Alexander I in 1818. The original design of the church was done by French architect Auguste de Montferrand, who was also responsible for much of the early development of St. Petersburg. Montferrand's design for the cathedral was influenced by various Neoclassical motifs, and the building was completed and consecrated in 1858. In 1931, the building was turned into a museum dedicated to the history of St. Petersburg, and it remained in this state until 1991.
