St. Catherine's Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world. The monastery is located in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, at the foot of Mount Sinai. The site of St. Catherine's was established around A.D. 548, by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. It was erected as a memorial to a fourth-century Christian martyr, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and was originally called the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Mount Sinai. The monastery has been home to multiple occupants throughout its history, including Greek Orthodox monks, Armenian monks, Coptic monks, Bedouin tribespeople, and even the Crusaders. In the 11th century, St. Catherine’s was extensively enlarged and fortified by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX, who added a series of monastic cells and defensive walls. Over the following centuries, the monastery became a center for pilgrimage and devotion. In the 15th century, the monastery was the subject of the Sultanate of Egypt, and was the site of several notable events in the region. In 1853, an agreement was made between the Sultan of Egypt and the Russian Imperial government, which allowed the Russian Orthodox Church to use the monastery as its own.
