Shiretoko Peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed National Park located at the northern tip of the remote Hokkaido Prefecture in northern Japan. The Shiretoko Peninsula covers an area of 67,437 hectares of land and sea, and is protected as a nature reserve due to its diverse and abundant wildlife. It is home to some of the country’s few remaining endangered species such as the Steller's sea eagle, Blakiston’s fish owl, and Japanese airan goose. The peninsula also has some of the best onsen (natural hot springs) and fascinating views of 20 surrounding volcanic peaks of the center of Shiretoko National Park. History:

The Shiretoko Peninsula is located at the eastern most point of Hokkaido, Japan. It has been home to ancestral Ainu people for centuries. The area has long been known for its abundance of wildlife and stunning natural scenery. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The region was first settled by the Ainu in the 8th century. They built homes and hunted game in the area. During the 17th century, European traders began arriving in the region and set up trading posts in the peninsula. In 1868, Japan officially annexed the area.
