The Nizami Ganjavi monument in Italy was erected on October 18, 1999, to mark the 750th anniversary of the great Persian poet’s death. Nizami Ganjavi is one of the most respected and renowned poets in Persian literature. His monumental work, the Khamseh, consists of five epic poems each of which deals with a different subject. The monument is a great symbol of cultural and literary exchange between Italy and Azerbaijan, as well as an important reminder of the contributions of Persian culture to the world. It was erected on the occasion of the official visit of Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev to Italy in October 1999.
