St Francis Xavier Cathedral was consecrated on 29 July 1858. The first Mass was held on 4 October 1857, and it remains the longest serving cathedral in the state of South Australia. When it was built the cathedral was the largest building in the colony of South Australia at the time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
