Nihonkirisuto Kyodan Shinshu Church is a Japanese Buddhist denomination, also known as Shin Buddhism. It is a tradition of the Pure Land school within Mahayana Buddhism and is considered to be the most commonly practiced form of Buddhism in Japan. The denomination was founded in the 13th century by Shinran, a monk and disciple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

Shinran traveled in China and met the Chinese Zen master Fazang, and later studied the teachings of the Pure Land teacher Honen, with whose lineage Shinran began his own school of Jodo-shinshu, or True Pure Land Buddhism. Shinran built up the faith by emphasizing faith and otherworldliness, leading to the popularity of Jodo-shinshu among the common people. The original teachings of Jodo-shinshu were known as the Hongwanji-ha tradition, which divides into the two branches of the Otani-ha and the Higashi Hongwanji-ha.
