The first group of actors that made up the Sakha Theatre was drawn from among financially struggling young local actors. The group was led by Pavel Ivanovich Plyusnin, who had had experience with the legendary People's House of Art in Moscow and later trained local actors in Yakutsk. The earliest period of the theatre was characterized by an attempt to create a national Yakut theatrical language based on folklore. The repertoire was focused on staging both plays from the Russian classical repertoire and Yakut local plays. For nearly two decades the company created an image of the Yakut theatrical identity and established the Sakha people's theatre as a leader in the region's theatrical life. In 1950, the company was disbanded and resurrected in 1954 as an experimental theatre. During this period, the group performed not only plays by the Yakut authors, but also plays by Soviet and foreign playwrights.
