Over the course of centuries, it has been the site of numerous military parades, military victories, and state celebrations. Originally, it was the site of the hunting grounds of the Grand Princes of Muscovy in the 13th century. In the 16th century, Ivan the Terrible constructed an earthen fortification known as the “Mila Log” on the hill that was designed to be the point of defense against enemies of the Tsar. The hill became a major site in Russian military history during the Great Northern War in 1709. On the 8th of September, Tsar Peter I rode up the hill on a white horse to pay homage to the battlefields that had resulted in a major victory over the Swedish army. This event has since become known as the “Great Bow” and is commemorated at Poklonnaya Hill in the present day. In 1812, the hill was the site of a monument to the 1812 War with Napoleon dedicated in 1814. In 1825, a Triumphal Arch was constructed on the site to celebrate the Russian victory against the French. During the 1820s and 1830s, the hill was the site of a series of parades and military reviews, and in 1909 it was the site of the 200th anniversary of the ‘Great Bow’.
