History:

Gorky Park is a large recreational park in Moscow, Russia. It was named in honour of Maxim Gorky. The park has an area of 635,000 square meters and is situated on the Moskva River. The current Gorky Park was built in 1928, on the site of a former industrial waste-ground. When it opened, its two main attractions were the "Aquapark" and the "Lunapark" (amusement park). At the same time an adjoining section was turned into a public beach, and there were also a number of restaurants and shops. In 1935, the park was the site of a private music festival, Putzier Musik-Fest. During this time, it was also the site of the 1st Moscow Film Festival, which celebrated the innovative films of the Soviet Union. During WWII, the park was taken over by the Red Army and was used to accommodate wounded soldiers and their families. After the war, the park was restored and re-opened to the public. In the 1950s, a large ferris wheel and a roller coaster were built in the park. In the 1960s, a larger merry-go-round and a variety of other rides were added. During this era, Gorky Park became a favorite recreation spot of the Soviet people and the headquarters of the Central Circus. In the 1970s, the park added an open-air theater and a theater night club. There was also a skating rink and a winter garden.
