History:

The Museum of Fine Arts in Nizhny Novgorod was first established in 1885. At the time, the museum featured European works from the 16th-19th centuries, including paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Rubens, and van Dyk. In 1886, the museum began to acquire works from Russian artists, including works by Alexander Ivanov, Ilia Repin, and Karl Bryullov. In 1912, the museum opened the "Picturesque Gallery" a section of the museum dedicated to displaying landscape paintings. The museum's exhibition space was further increased in 1930, with the construction of a new building. After this, an extensive inventory of foreign and Russian art, sculpture, and other forms of decorative art was added to the museum's collection. Following World War II, the museum was greatly impacted and suffered a decrease in its display space, as well as a decrease in operating staff. A restoration of the museum began in the 1970s and during that decade the museum acquired an extensive collection of Russian essays, including works by Kazimir Malevich and Vera Ukhanova.
