The Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow (also known as the Memorial Museum of Astronautics and Space Exploration) was opened in 1981 and is one of Russia's oldest and most respected space exploration museums. It was initiated by the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and is located in the former Lenin Hills overlooking the Moscow River. The museum is home to many important artifacts related to the Soviet Space Program, including the famous Vostok 1 capsule in which cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space on 12th April 1961.
