The Central Museum of the Armed Forces (CMAF) in Moscow, Russia was established in November 1918 as the Museum of the Red Army (MRA). It was initially based in the House of the Soviet of People’s Commissars at Gorki Street. Established with the goal of collecting materials from the civil war, the MRA underwent several changes in its purpose throughout its history. In the 1930s, the museum was renamed the Museum of the Great Patriotic War of the Red Army, which mostly collected artifacts relating to the Great Patriotic War (WWII). Following this, the museum underwent further changes in purpose and is now a national museum dedicated to the history of Russia’s armed forces since the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922. The CMAF is home to a variety of exhibitions including weapons, military vehicles, photographs, documents and regalia. It features a 120,000 volume library, a library of audio-visual materials and collections of artwork including battle scenes and propaganda paintings.
