Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky is an Eastern Orthodox church founded in the 12th century. The cathedral was founded by a local monk named Lyasota in 1130 and was dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was celebrated by the local population as the heavenly protector of the city. The church was initially constructed under the direction of the Bishop of Rostov, who was sent to Pereslavl-Zalessky to spread Christianity. In 1144, the cathedral was renovated under the patronage of St. Andrew the Apostle, after which it was renamed Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the cathedral was transformed into a Baroque style building, which was completed in 1780. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
