Mosque of Al-Sayyidah Zainab - Aswan In Egypt: Brief History,Architecture,Visiting Hours, & Travel Information
Architecture:
The Mosque of al-Sayyidah Zaynab is located in the Nubian City of Aswan, Egypt. It is the oldest mosque in Aswan, located at the base of the great dam, about 400 yards away from the Nile River. The mosque was commissioned in 684 A.D. and was completed in 685 A.D. by Sa’d bin Wa’il, a commander during the Umayyad Caliphate. The architectural style of the Mosque of al-Sayyidah Zaynab is heavily influenced by the Abbasid style, combining elements from both Byzantine, as well as Persian architecture. It has a square front, with a large dome, and four smaller domes adorning each corner of the mosque. The dome is supported on four arches, which are topped by over 100 turrets and minarets. The interior of the mosque is very intricate and detailed, with several beautiful decorations and wall paintings. The main entrance of the mosque consists of a hajj-style archway, decorated with gold paint, and two minarets, topped with crown-style crenelations. The sides of the mosque consist of large windows, which let in lots of light and provide a better view of the river below. The overall design of the mosque is a unique mix of Nubian, Persian, and Arabic architectural elements, making it a unique example of Nubian art and culture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
