History:

The Main Guard was the name given to a large military garrison located in the centre of Dublin from the 17th century up to the 19th century. It was one of the most important military establishments of its time in Ireland, and the name Main Guard is still used today by Dubliners to refer to the area around the former garrison. The Main Guard was first established in 1603 by the English Crown during the Tudor conquest of Ireland. It was initially garrisoned by English troops and served as a key point of strategic defence for the Crown in Dublin. The Main Guard was the centre from which numerous campaigns of conquest and pacification were launched. During the 18th century, the Main Guard was used as a base for British forces in Ireland and was the site of several important battles, notably the Battle of Dublin during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The Main Guard was also the site of numerous executions, most notably of the rebel leaders Hugh MacCawell and Art MacMonigal in 1798. In 1816, responsibility for the Main Guard was transferred to the military authorities in Dublin. In 1819, responsibility for the site was transferred again to the newly formed Dublin Castle administration, which subsequently developed a prison and cantonment at the Main Guard. In 1882, the Irish parliamentary leader Charles Stewart Parnell made a famous speech criticising the conditions at the site. The Main Guard was eventually decommissioned in the early 19th century and the buildings were demolished and replaced with parks and public housing. Despite its demolition, the site continues to be known as the Main Guard today and is an important part of Dublin’s cultural and historical landscape.
