It was built in 1924 to hold and display the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union. The body was placed in the mausoleum in August 1924, shortly after Lenin's death in January of that same year. The Mausoleum was designed by the prominent Russian architect Alexey Schusev. The building is a wooden structure with a portico that is composed of red marble blocks and is adorned with a five point star. Inside, the body was laid in a glass sarcophagus. The walls of the Mausoleum were also adorned with Lenin's writings and symbols or objects significant in the revolution he had led. Over the years, the mausoleum underwent a number of renovations, with the most prominent being in 1945, when the size was increased to match the surrounding Moscow Kremlin walls. The interior was also altered, to ensure that the temperature and humidity within the mausoleum were controlled to the optimal levels for the preservation of Lenin's body. Public access to Lenin's tomb became a Soviet tradition, as millions of people paid their respects to the man responsible for Russia's revolution. In the Soviet period it was a popular tourist destination even though no photography was allowed inside the mausoleum.
