Långholmen Prison in Sweden is an old prison, located on Långholmen in the Södermalm borough of Stockholm. It was originally built in the 1700s to house both adult and juvenile offenders, as well as being an asylum for the mentally ill. It was converted into a prison by the Swedish government in 1787, and was officially closed as a prison in 1975. History:

Långholmen Prison is located on Långholmen Island in Stockholm, Sweden. It has been in existence since the 17th century, making it one of Sweden's oldest operating prison facilities. It was initially used for political prisoners or criminals who had committed major offences. In 1792, the island was purchased by Swedish King Gustav III and was used to house prisoners from Sweden's closed prison system. The early prison structures were comprised of wooden buildings with no brick or stone foundations. By the 1850s, the prison was overcrowded and unsuccessful, as prisoners often escaped or committed other crimes. In 1875, the prison underwent major reforms, and the foundation became brick and stone. By the 1880s, new buildings were constructed, including a hospital, a church, training areas, and a kitchen. Punishments at the prison were severe, and prisoners were often punished with solitary confinement or deprivation of hot food. Beginning in the 1950s, the prison was used primarily for drug offenders, as drug offenses began to be deemed serious crimes in Sweden. Despite this, conditions in the prison were still deemed inadequate by Swedish prison standards. As a result, in the 1970s the prison was closed permanently and converted into a hotel. Today, the prison remains a hotel, but parts of it are still used for a the Långholmen Prison Museum, which highlights the prison's history.
