The Coptic Museum in Cairo, Egypt opened its doors to the public in 1910. The museum was founded by Marcus Simaika (1864-1944), an Alexandria born businessman and Coptic nationalist, and is the first museum in the world dedicated to Coptic Art. Simaika acquired numerous manuscripts, crosses, jewelry, and sculptures, from private families and public collections in Egypt and Europe, thus forming the museum’s core collection. Before the opening of the museum, many of the artifacts housed were kept in churches and monastery collections throughout the country, prior to being gathered by its founder. He believed strongly in creating a public forum for the promotion of the Coptic heritage to a wider audience, thus allowing it to continue to exist and flourish in the region. Today, the museum holds more than 16,000 objects, including rare manuscripts, magnificent icons, textiles, codices, sculptures, stained glass, and woodcarvings. Its modern building, completed in 1934, contains several galleries in which visitors can admire the splendid artifacts from the Coptic period. The museum also has a library, a bookshop, and a small archaeological garden. It is still managed by the Coptic Orthodox Church and plays an essential role in the protection and promotion of Coptic culture.
