History:

Arkhangelskoye Estate is an estate located in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It was established in the mid-18th century by Count Lysva Bezborodko and belonged to his descendants until it was expropriated by the Soviet government in the 1930s. It was one of the earliest strongholds of the Russian nobility and served as a summer residence for Russian Tsars. From 18th to the 20th century, the estate was the home of many of the country’s most influential families including Bezborodkos, Cantacuzènes, Vorontsov-Dashkovs, Burenins, Litvinovs, and Potockis. The original manor house was built around 1760 and was designed by the English architect William Chambers. Other structures included a library, a bathhouse, a chapel, several dependencies, and a conservatory. In the 19th century, the estate was transformed into an impressive country estate as part of a major reconstruction project commissioned by Princess Yulia Cantacuzène. During the Russian Revolution and pursuant Civil War, Arkhangelskoye was a hideaway for many fleeing Russians, including Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The estate was seized by the government in 1919, and briefly served as the Main Political Education House of the Red Army and a sanatorium for soldiers. Later, it became an agricultural labor commune. Since the 1940s, Arkhangelskoye has been used as a museum and a nature preserve. Today, visitors can explore the estate’s grounds, which include several ponds and various historical structures, such as the grand Neo-Classical mansion, clocktower and summerhouse.
