Al-Azhar Park in Cairo is an 30 hectare urban park located in the heart of Old Cairo, near City of the Dead. Founded in 1985, it was constructed on an abandoned area of the city that was once home to a large garbage dump. The park is named after Al-Azhar Mosque, one of the oldest and most renowned institutions of Islamic learning in the world. The park was designed by the Tunisian architect and urban planner Raphael Nicolas, who created a vast botanical garden with terraced pathways, gardens, lakes and fountains. The park provides a variety of services and is popular among locals, providing a safe and tranquil space for leisure and recreation. It provides places for biking, running, jogging, food stalls, concerts, art galleries and events. It is also home to a planetarium and an Ittihadiya Library.
