History:

The Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, is a modern museum dedicated to housing and exhibiting the artefacts from the Acropolis of Athens. Built between 2003 and 2009 on a site adjacent to the Acropolis itself, the museum was designed by Swiss-born architect Bernard Tschumi, in collaboration with Greek architect Michalis Photiadis. Today, it houses over 4,000 artifacts from the monuments of the Acropolis, and is one of the most visited attractions in Greece. The origins of the Acropolis Museum trace back to 1834, when Greece passed the law allowing museums to open on the Acropolis. The Museum of Athene was opened shortly after, in 1839, and showcased artefacts from the Parthenon and other monuments on the Acropolis. Over the next century, the museum developed into the pressing need for a better-structured, large educational and archaeological research center arose, and in 1975 the new Acropolis Museum was planned. The completion of the museum was delayed by political and financial issues, and it was not until 2003 that ground was broken for the modern Acropolis Museum. Today the Acropolis Museum is a professionally designed, world-class museum, with four levels of displays, including an impressive glass column design in the central atrium.
