History:

Yen Tu Mountain is a mountain in the province of Quang Ninh, northern Vietnam and is part of the Yen Tu Mountain range. It is located around 70 kilometers from Hanoi. The mountain is famous for its spiritual significance and its prominence in Buddhism. The mountain first came to prominence in the 11th century during the rule of King Ly, who built a pagoda on the mountainside and declared the mountain to be a place of pilgrimage and learning. During the Tran Dynasty in the 13th century, a Buddhist meditation centre was established on Yen Tu, and in 1319, a monastery was founded by the famous scholar-monk, Tran Nhan Tong. Yen Tu is often referred to as the cradle of Buddhism in Vietnam, and it is said to be the birthplace of the religion in the country. As such, the mountain has long been an important site for pilgrimage; both in the times of the Imperial Court, and during the period of French colonial rule.
