Hoi An is an ancient town located in Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. Known formerly as Faifo, it is one of the oldest towns in the country and has long been a major trading port. The area has seen settlers from Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese and French civilizations over the centuries. In the 16th century, Hoi An was an important trading port of the Asia-Pacific region. During this time, foreign merchants would come to trade their wares, exchanging goods with local merchants. In the 17th century, the merchants from China and Japan were so numerous that they outnumbered the local population. During this period, there was an influx of Chinese people who migrated to Hoi An and introduced Chinese culture, architecture, and cooking styles to the area. Hoi An was an important trading hub for the Vietnamese, trading Chinese and Japanese goods as well as local merchandise. These included pottery, silk, guns, and ceramics. In its heyday, cloth dyed in Hoi An was sold as far away as Europe. At this point, Hoi An began to prosper and slowly became home to a growing number of affluent merchants. In the 18th century, the Japanese and Chinese traders chose Hoi An over other trading centers in the region, making it one of the most powerful economic centers.
