History:

Santa Rosa de Agua is a historic village located in the Venezuelan state of Zulia. It was founded in 1523 by the Spanish conquistadors as a mission for evangelizing the indigenous population. At the time, the area was inhabited by the Wayuu people who had been living in the region for centuries. The settlement was given the name Santa Rosa de Agua for a nearby well that produced healing waters. In the 16th century, the village grew as a center of trade and industry. Its location on the main Carrera Vieja served as an important transit point between Spain and its colonies. As the population increased, a fort was constructed to protect the area from pirate attacks. In 1730, Santa Rosa de Agua became part of the Province of Venezuela. Throughout the colonial period, the settlement continued to serve the needs of the local population and those of the travelers passing through. In 1810, the village's residents joined the Venezuelan War of Independence against Spanish rule and the fortress was destroyed in 1814. After the war was won, the village was rebuilt and its name was changed to Santa Rosa de Agua de Maracaibo. In 1823, Santa Rosa de Agua de Maracaibo became part of the newly formed Zulia State. Since then, the village has seen its fair share of turbulence throughout the struggle for independence and the civil wars.
