History:

Located just east of Caracas, El Valle de Caracas is a neighborhood in the Venezuelan capital which was founded in 1567. Originally named San José de El Valle de Caracas, it was given its current name in 1938. The area was once home to a large indigenous population, prior to Spanish colonization of the region. The area was documented for the first time in 1567 by a military governor, Juan de Pimentel. Soon after, El Valle became a major rural center in the region as it supported many small farms and copper and gold mining operations. Through the next two centuries, El Valle experienced several transformations. In the 19th century, it saw considerable growth due to an influx of primarily Spanish and Portuguese immigrants. In the early 20th century, El Valle became a popular spot for wealthy Caraqueños, who sought refuge away from the bustling capital. During this period, much of the area's vegetation was cleared away for residential housing. Today, El Valle is still a thriving working-class neighborhood composed mainly of Venezuelan immigrants. The area retains much of its rural character and is known for its picturesque church, a bright pink wall with a painting of the Virgin Mary, and the historic Gracias a Dios temple.
