History:

The Morro de San Juan is a fort located on Margarita Island in the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta. The fort's construction began in 1764 under the direction of Lt. Col. Tomas Rodríguez, with the fort being completed in 1790. The fort was frequently attacked and besieged by pirates and privateers, most notably by English privateer, James Sullivan, who attacked the fort from 1798 to 1799. This siege was the inspiration for a local version of the legend of the singing of the Morro, which tells that during the siege, a group of women, mostly slaves, that were inside the fort, sang a local song at sunset everyday. The fort was also attacked during the Venezuelan War of Independence by a large naval fleet led by Rear Admiral Don Roycroft. The fort was successfully defended by the brave commander, Colonel Cruz Acosta. The attack was eventually repelled and the fort remained in the hands of the Spanish. Today, the Morro de San Juan is part of Los Frailes National Park. The fort is open to visitors and is a popular tourist destination on Margarita Island.
