History:

The El Ávila National Park Cable Car was built in 1959 and began operations in 1960, spanning from El Hatillo and Caracas, Maripérez. The cable car’s purpose was to provide a mode of efficient transportation from the city to the park for residents of Caracas and El Hatillo in order to access fresh air, greenery, and recreational activities. During its first two decades, the cable car was widely used and allowed thousands of people to enjoy El Ávila Park's hiking trails, waterfalls, and stunning landscapes. However, in the late 70s, security deteriorated and robberies started to occur near the cable car. This caused public patronage to drop significantly, making the cable car much less utilized. In 2000, the government of Hugo Chávez started a restoration project in order to revitalize the park and improve its security. As a part of this project, a team of engineers resumed operations of the cable car on November 27, 2008. The cable car was once again available to citizens of Caracas, however the experience was different due to the implementation of tighter security policies and restrictions on photography. In 2010, the Mayor of El Hatillo, David Smolansky, successfully pushed for the cable car to go free of charge for its patrons. This was a major step in encouraging public patronage and the project soon saw an increase in ridership. As of 2018, the cable car is still operational and remains a popular mode of transportation for residents of El Hatillo and Caracas. Today, the government of Venezuela continues to make efforts to improve El Ávila National Park and encourage public utilization, and the cable car remains a major part of these efforts.
