History:

The history of the gardens of Vatican Radio dates back to the early 1920s. At the behest of Pope Pius XI, a transmitter was inaugurated in 1925 in order to provide a wide radio coverage of papal messages and other religious programming. By 1932, the transmitter had grown to such an extent that it needed a larger site and so the area in Vatican City was chosen to house the new building. The gardens of Vatican Radio were then developed as a way to host the transmitter and to offer an attractive vista to the many visitors to the Radio. Architect Marcello Piacentini was hired to construct a series of buildings that included a power supply and a water reservoir as well as a landscape featuring trees, shrubs, lawns, fountains, and a series of paths leading to the various buildings. The gardens were also adorned with shrines to various saints. The gardens were restructured during the reign of Pope John Paul II and extensive new plantings were put in place. The gardens also saw some minor restructuring during the reign of Pope Benedict XVI. The gardens are still a popular spot for visitors, who are able to enjoy a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere as they view the architecture of the buildings and the beauty of the gardens.
