Pope reportedly based the design of the Jefferson Memorial on the Pantheon in Rome, one of Jefferson’s favored architectural references. The memorial is built out of marble and stands 190 feet tall including a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson in the center. The interior is a circular structure with 24 Doric columns, a marble floor, and inscriptions of Jefferson’s most famous writings all around. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial includes features such as a blazing rose window, a large bronze door, and two paneled glass wings that each showcase quotes from his writings. The floor is inscribed with the words “We Hold These Truths To Be Self Evident…” in reference to the declaration of Independence and its author.
