History:
The history of Central Park in New York City dates back to 1853 when the New York State Legislature authorized a seven hundred and eighty square acre park to be constructed in Manhattan. This area is now known as Central Park. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a naturalistic park with terraces, winding paths, and tranquil waterscapes to provide a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Olmsted and Vaux’s plan for the park was the first of its kind in the United States and it quickly became an inspiration for many other urban parks. The park was built over the course of fourteen years and featured artificial bodies of water, rolling meadows, and a wide variety of vegetation. The first few years of construction were difficult as the land was not easy to work with and Olmsted and Vaux had to contend with political messages as well as financial issues. The opening of Central Park in the 1870s marked a turning point for New York City. The park was a source of recreation, beauty, and symbolism of the prosperous values and democratic principles of the United States. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the park underwent numerous alterations as it adapted to the changing needs of the public. In the 1950s, Robert Moses's redevelopment program brought renewed vigor and preservation to the park. Today, Central Park is one of the world’s most famous urban parks, visited and used by millions of people annually. Its vast array of attractions- lakes, skating rinks, play areas, sculptures, and more- make it a place where visitors of all ages can escape the hustle and bustle of city life and find relaxation and recreation.
